[edit] Biography
Catherine was one of the 15 children of Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor and Anna of Bohemia and Hungary. On October 22, 1549, she married Francesco III Gonzaga, prince of Mantua. He died 4 months after marriage. On June 23, 1553 she became the third wife of King Sigismund II Augustus of Poland and Lithuania, who was her paternal first cousin.
Catherine became pregnant and miscarried in October 1554. After that the King began to believe that his marriage was cursed and attempt to have it annulled. Sigismund's discontent with Catherine was based on the fact that she was sister of his first wife and they were connected. In 1566 she left Poland and died in Linz in 1572.
Catherine of Austria was buried in the Sankt Florian monastery in Austria.
