Dr. Catherine Cornelius was born in Lakeland. She earned a bachelor's degree in history and government with a minor in Spanish language and literature from Rollins College in 1963 and had originally planned to pursue a career in the foreign service. However, she realized that education was her top priority, and in 1978 she received her Doctorate from the University of Florida.
Dr. Cornelius became president of South Florida Community College in 1984. She ended up serving in this position for 17 years, and ultimately retired in 2002. Prior to accepting the presidency at SFCC, Cornelius was vice president of Academic Affairs and Institutional Planning at Daytona Beach Community College's Cooperative and Career Education Program.[1]
Dr. Cornelius has three nephews, William Burch Cornelius II, P.E., Robert Burch Cornelius, E.I., and Richard Burch Cornelius, P.U.
