Cathedral Preparatory School, is a male-only Roman Catholic high school in Erie, Pennsylvania in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie. Prep was established in 1921 by then Erie Catholic Bishop John Mark Gannon. Bishop Gannon founded Prep as an all-male Catholic high school.

The school was originally located underneath St. Peter’s Cathedral in what is presently the Prep cafeteria. In 1953, an Auditorium and a three level classroom addition were constructed as enrollment grew. The last major addition to the school was the 1964 science wing addition at the corner of 10th & Myrtle in order to accommodate the growth of the school. Cathedral Prep’s first graduating class of 1925 consisted of just 44 students.

[edit] Athletics

Cathedral Prep is a member of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association in District 10, Region 6. The mascot of Cathedral Prep is the Rambler. Originally named for the "rambling" roses found outside of St. Peter's Cathedral (Prep's namesake) the image has changed over time to be portrayed as ram. The current Prep football logo bears a resemblance to the one used for Dodge vehicles.

[edit] Football

In 2000, the Cathedral Prep football team led by future college stars Ed Hinkel and Charles Rush and also Tim Dance won the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association class "AAAA" football title. The team ended Pennsylvania football power Central Bucks West's 59 game winning streak. They finished with a 14-0 record and a #4 national ranking by USA Today.[1]

[edit] Basketball

The Cathedral Prep basketball team has won two PIAA Basketball Championships (1980 and 1993) and three PCIAA (Pennsylvania Catholic Interscholastic Athletic Association) in 1953, 1954, and 1971. Cathedral Prep has turned out a total of 22 Division 1 basketball players in its 80+ years.

Every year the Cathedral Prep team hosts the McDonald's Classic held at Gannon University. The tournament is considered the best 4 team tournament in the country by HoopsUSA. Prep has won the tournament three years in 1987, 1991, and 1993. [2]

[edit] Renovations

[edit] Current

Over the last decade Cathedral Prep has undergone interior renovations to the halls and classrooms of all four floors in its main building, with the halls and rooms of the auditorium and science wing to follow. The project, which encompasses new windows, ceilings, walls, lockers, lighting fixtures, carpeting, and a technology infrastructure has a projected completion cost of three million dollars. Money has been accumulated through grants and alumni contributions.

[edit] Future

Prep has announced plans of a new state-of-the-art athletic facility to be built on the former site of the EMI Foundry Building on the southeast corner of 12th & Cherry Streets. The complex will include an athletic field (for use by the football, lacrosse, and soccer teams) with A-Turf; a gymnasium with enough seating to house varsity basketball games (1,800 seats); a 400-seat natatorium; a new wrestling room; weight room; and an 8-lane, all-weather track. The building of the new facility will be part of a $10-12 million dollar capital campaign to update the science hall and auditorium. [3]

Cathedral Prep is also looking into updating their auditorium for more advanced activities, especially for their new MVP Program (Music, Visual, and Performance Arts). [4]
