Catharine M. "Cathy" Young (R,C,I, born in Livingston County, New York) is the New York State senator from the state's 57th district, which includes all of Chautauqua County, Cattaraugus County and Allegany County, with a small corner of Livingston County. When not in legislative session, she currently resides in Olean, New York.
Young succeeded Patricia McGee to the New York Assembly in a series of events following the death of Jess Present, where she served what is now the 149th district. In April 2005, McGee died, and Young was nominated as her replacement.
After Mrs. Young's election to the New York State Senate in a By-election on May 10, 2005, she has been appointed to Chair the Senate Agriculture Committee, Co-Chair's the Administrative Regulations Review Commission while also serving as a member of the Senate Aging Committee, Environmental Conservation Committee, Higher Education Committee, Housing, Construction & Community Development Committee, Mental Health & Developmental Disabilities Committee and the Social Services, Children & Families Committee.
Young was succeeded in the Assembly by Joseph Giglio.
Young rarely faces stiff competition during the elections. In 2006, she ran unopposed, while she defeated her opponents in the by-election and Assembly races by 40 percentage-point margins.
She is the mother of three children. She is a graduate of the St. Bonaventure University and majored in journalism. She transferred to St. Bonaventure after attending SUNY Fredonia. She chose St. Bonaventure University over Syracuse University, because of their "welcoming" enviroment.
