[edit] Plot summary
A one-night stand with a complete stranger triggers a series of unpleasant surprises for Holly Krauss, a married woman who, together with her business companion, Meg, is running her own small company which specializes in adventure holidays and business counselling. She is stalked, threatened, beaten up but cannot let go of her extravagant lifestyle. She soon finds herself again in dire straits when she kibitzes at a game of poker. Out of sheer joy of life, she joins in the game although she is drunk and cannot play well and eventually loses £11,000 to one of the other players.
Gradually, her mental health seems to be declining. Her artist husband Charlie, although good-natured and sympathetic, is a procrastinator and as such not really up to her needs. Only while attempting suicide by taking an overdose of pills does Holly realize that it is some of the people on whom she depends who do not wish her well.
