"Catch Me Though You Can't" is the forty-first sub-episode of Tom and Jerry Tales.
[edit] Summary
Tom is a lowly tab tech to a mad scientist who has invented a velocity-enhancing, speed-altering Ultra Zapper (in other words, a speed ray). He plans to experiment it on a turtle; however, Tom inadvertently chases Jerry into the path of the beam, giving him super speed.
As if he didn't have enough of a time trying to catch Jerry before, Tom is now charged with the task of catching a faster-than-ever mouse. He uses various speed enhancing devices--a scooter and a large tire among them--but to no avail. Meantime, Jerry rescues and befriends both Spike and a mother duck out with her babies.
While Jerry amuses his new pals with his feats of speed, Tom flies by on a chair attached to a hot-air balloon with the velocity-enhancing, speed-altering Ultra Zapper mounted on it. He zaps Jerry, rendering him to his original speed--however, not looking where he's going, he drifts too near some pointy flagpoles that pop the balloon and sends him spiraling out of control. The velocity-enhancing, speed-altering Ultra Zapper falls on the ground near Spike, and he thinks of it as a shooting-gallery prop; "I've always wanted one of them!". The bulldog has fun blasting Tom, making him go slow, then normal, then slow again....
[edit] Observations
- The title parodies that of the Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio film Catch Me If You Can.
- The sound effects used when Jerry runs at top speed are similar to that of both the Roadrunner (possibly a nod to Chuck Jones work with the cat and mouse duo in the sixties) and the Tasmanian Devil.
