Catalina Video
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Catalina Video is an award-winning production house of gay pornography, founded in 1978 by William Higgins. The company was primarily a distributor for Nova Studios in 1982. In 1987, Scott Masters was hired as its head of production, and he began making films for the studio. The company's fortunes improved, and they opened a second studio in San Francisco.
Catalina Video was the “Crown Jewel” of the gay adult entertainment industry throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s. Not only did it produce landmark and innovative films such as Big Guns, Hot Rods: Young and Hung II, Sailor in the Wild, Undercover, The Rise, Jawbreaker and Gay Erotic Video Awards Best Gay Adult Movie of all time Powertool. The ground-breaking studio is also credited for single-handedly building the bi-sexual film genre with hits such as The Big Switch and Revenge of the Bi Dolls.
It’s stellar roster of discoveries are a who's who of porn legends, including Kip Noll, the first “twink” superstar, Leo Ford (porn star), 80’s blond surfer boy, Kevin Williams, one of the most popular “bottoms” of all time, sexy brunette Mike Henson, nasty stud Steve Rambo, the sultry John Davenport, the unforgettable Matt Ramsey (aka Peter North), Asian porn stud Brandon Lee, and gay porn icon Jeff Stryker - who made several successful films for the studio including In Hot Pursuit, The Switch Is On, The Look, and Powertool.
Since 2001, Catalina Video, has concentrated more on restoring, re-editing and re-scoring its classic films for re-release on DVD and less on producing newer titles. However, with the addition of the company to Channel 1 Releasing's roster of brands in 2007, fans can expect to see new big budget productions under the Catalina name on store shelves in the near future.
