Catalina Vásquez Villalpando was the 39th Treasurer of the United States from November 20, 1989 to January 20, 1993 under President George H.W. Bush.
Ms. Villalpando has the distinction of being the only Treasurer ever sent to prison, for obstruction of justice. She received a four-month prison sentence,[1] probation, a fine, and community service for conspiring to withhold information from the federal government and the United States Senate. She pleaded guilty to obstruction and tax evasion and assisted the government in its further investigation of corruption related to her case in return for the light sentence; originally, she had faced 15 years in prison and $750,000 in fines.[citation needed]
Villalpando admitted, as part of her plea, that she received substantial benefits as part of a severance deal with a former employer, Communications International Inc., a company from Georgia for which she was a high-ranking executive. It is illegal for an employee of the government to receive material benefits from private companies or outfits.
Ms. Villalpando's signature can be seen on all United States paper currency issued during her tenure as Treasurer.
