U·s·e·r  Felix the Cassowary

Felix the Cassowary is a contributor to Wikipedia, born, bred and residing in Melbourne. He is the only known member of the Casuarius victoriensis species.

Like most cassowaries, He enjoys many areas. He has two bachelors degrees, one in Computer Science and another in Cognitive Science, including some linguistics from La Trobe Uni, and also has interest in local politics and free software (He doesn’t care about open source software—but which cassowary does?).

He’s also known as the inevitible Indisputable Overlord of the Whole World. As the inevitability of his indisputable overlordship is also indisputable, his theoretical power is equivalent to that of an Indisputable Overlord. It is therefore recommended that you obey His every whim, or His minions may have something to say about it. The current overlords of the world are a Cabal of Cartographers, who have been ruling the world for over two hundred years.

His Overlordship has surveyed parts of his domain in Victoria, New South Wales, the ACT, London, Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Sweden and Kyrgyzstan. His longest stay in any single country outside of Australia was about three weeks in Kyrgyzstan, where He surveyed Bishkek, Karakol and Jeti Ögüz (Жети Өгүз). Much work is needed in Kyrgyzstan before the country is at an adequate standard, although Jeti Oguz is very beautiful.

His Overlordship speaks and prefers to write Australian English. His preferred spelling system involves a complete overhaul of the system—spelling reform is definitely one of His Overlordship's most important policies. For the sake of others on Wikipedia, He uses spellings like "program" and "honor", which have a long established history of use in Australia (in the case of "program", dating to before the introduction of the French spelling). He understands a certain amount of German and has forgotten most of the rudimentry Italian, Japanese and Kyrgyz He once learnt.

O·t·h·e·r · M·e·s:

  • I used to be User:Kesuari (Nov. 2003 – March 2005), but evolved into the fully-fledged Cassowary you see before you today. I no longer use that account; please tell me if you see any changes by it!
  • In between, and presumably before, I did a bit of work as a few anonymous IPs, mostly User:202.147.117.39 (which seems to be static; March 2004 – Nov. 2005).
      The total edits by these three users is 1277 + 277 + 83 = 1637, as at 08:49, 11 November 2005 (UTC); thus spakes Kate's tool.
  • I am Cassowary on the Wikimedia Commons and Wiktionary, too.

S·t·u·f·f:

  • The freakiest article on all of Wikipedia is, without doubt, French spacing. It does not in particular discuss French spacing, but discusses in great deal the term "French spacing" and the changes in spacing conventions over the last 150 or so years in the French, British and American traditions. It certainly contains a lot of information, but how much belongs there I can't say.

C·a·m·p·a·i·g·n·s:

  • I lead a campaign—or I would, if I had any followers—against the use of the "Not to be confused with ..." disambiguation headers. They sound stupid and never tell you what it is you're not confusing them with. Whenever I see them, I replace them with something that says "This article is about (whatever). See (foo) for (something else)."
  • Based on the way people use them, it is worth noting that *asterisks* denote *emphasis*, and not boldness; emphasis corresponds to italics (_underscores_ correspond to a different use of italics — not underlining). Typically, the plain text way to do boldness is with capital letters.
  • I gather there is, was, or will be some issue with strange boxes on the side that tell people stuff about users in a colorful way. I finally got off my arse and added one, largely because it's really stupid. I hope this is not interpreted in taking sides.
