[edit] Meaning of "Amenity Area"

What is an amenity area? This may be a British english term? While I am guessing "park" (as in Central Park) is the US equivalent, I cannot be sure. A search for the term did not turn up many other uses in other articles (none I could spot, actually). It may be a good idea to define this term in passing, especially since it's in the lead of the article. Cheers. (it really seems quite the lovely park and quite the comprehensive article) ++Lar 13:47, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind words -- it was a labour of love as I used to live 200 yards from the park and walked there very often. "Amenity area" is one of those stock phrases used by officialdom whose meaning you never analyse. My (Oxford Concise) dictionary says "noun - pleasantness (of places, persons, etc.); pleasant ways". It's ultimately from the Latin adj. for "pleasant". In the UK an "amenity area" is a pleasant outdoor place where you can go to relax, stroll, picnic, etc. I'll try to come up with a better definition! Puffball 16:06, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
Perhaps a footnote of the term might be the way to go then, rather than an inline definition, as the footnote would allow you to be rather wordy which might be awkward for an inline. Just a suggestion. (I stumbled on to this article watching the WP:DYK page, because I nominated my own "labour of love" recently... your pride of creation shows through nicely!) Cheers. ++Lar 16:22, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
Yes, I'll try, maybe tomorrow when I've got more time. I was really pleased to see a DYK? flag on my talk page this morning. I don't know who nominated the article. Much of the credit must go to User:FrancisTyers for his expert and very quick formatting. The first draft had only been uploaded for 10 minutes when he set to work! Now I'm off to admire your page ... Puffball 16:36, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
Er, silly me, you already HAD some footnotes, pardon for giving the helps again. I took it upon myself to go ahead and add one for amenity area, using your definition as the meat. Please (of course!) feel free to change it around again if it doesn't suit you... Cheers. ++Lar 18:11, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
