I heard the story of Cassin Young's heroism at Pearl Harbor from a former crew member of the Cassin Young. The way he told it -- and this may be mere colorful embellishment -- after Cassin Young was blown off the Vestal, the crew decided to abandon ship. As they started over the side, they met Cassin Young coming up the ladder. He ordered them back to their posts in no uncertain terms, and not only beached and thus saved the Vestal, but rescued quite a few sailors from other ships who were afloat in the harbor on the way.
