[edit] History
Andres Castillero Middle School is named after Mexican cavalry captain Don Andrés Castillero, who once owned the mercury mines then called "Le Mina de Santa Clara"[1]. He had come to California in 1845[2] to visit the Santa Clara mission when he witnessed the Ohlone Indians using cinnabar powder to paint the mission's walls. He realized the value of the powder and quickly filed a claim for the land where the Ohlone had gotten their red powder. Because of this transaction, Andres Castillero shaped Almaden Valley and the surrounding areas. Before the introduction of uniforms to Castillero, the school experienced gang problems. Due to this the school's gray and green uniforms were introduced and used.
