How do we want to define the Caribbean?


Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela

  • CARICOM; mainly a political and economic entity.

Also: List of islands in the Caribbean

I'd want to go for the broad definition, but noting that the boundary between the Caribbean and South/Central America is quite fuzzy.fledgist 02:07, 29 July 2005 (UTC)

I would also include those areas that share a coast with the Carribean Sea. Texas, Brazil, Panama, Mexico, to name a few. These areas share a history intimate with the rest of the Caribbean proper.

I don't think I've ever seen or heard Florida referred to as a Caribbean place. Bermuda, however, is a Caricom associate member and is sometimes otherwise considered part of the region, so they should be included. Beyond that (and the other Caricom official and associate members), the other islands that are washed by the Caribbean sea should be included since they are geographically and culturally part of the Caribbean; these include Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Aruba, the Netherlands Antilles and wherever else I don't remember offhand. I don't think these are up for debate.

Then there are the countries on Central and South America that are washed by the Caribean Sea but are not otherwise considered parts of the Caribbean. Their inclusion, I think, is debatable. Hairouna 03:34, 7 December 2005 (UTC)


In Trinidad and Tobago we would consider Belize, Suriname and Guyana all part of the Caribbean even though they are in Central and South America. This is largely because of the historical links ... there is a common use of English in Guyana and Belize and all three countries are in CARICOM. Dave Smith 01:18, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Guyana is also part of the East Caribbean Supreme Court circuit. It seems like half the judges in the Eastern Caribbean are from Guyana. Legis (talk - contributions) 17:01, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Although the mainland countries are, IMO, Caribbean, I think we need to start with more tractable issues. So to begin with I want to compare coverage of the islands: /Coverage

Good question :) I think we need to come up with what we think each entity should have (main article, etc.) and we score them based on quality of the article. Maybe:

1 Stub or short entry

Ok-that sounds good-I can start on some of them tonight since I dont really have anything else to do. But another question-I just finished a re-write of the Cayman Islands article and its in good shape now but some of the more in-depth sub article (ie. Geography of the Cayman Islands are stubs-when rating an article should we look only at the main country page or at the sub pages? Please Advise. --Gpyoung 4 July 2005 23:43 (UTC)

Something that I have been noticing is that a lot of the sub-pages are taken verbatim out of the CIA World Factbook, and although this is good information -- it is nothing more than raw data. How do we want to approach these pages? --Gpyoung 5 July 2005 00:53 (UTC)

The Navy-Vieques protests, which ocurred from 1999-2001 were an extremely important event in the caribbean. It was the first time that the President of the US had to adress an issue of a little island that it's part of Puerto Rico. So much coverege was given to the event on CNN and the international comunity. Maybe the article can get expanded an pictures can be added.<<Coburn_Pharr>> 5 July 2005 05:54 (UTC)

Good idea - we need to figure out what sort of things we want to do here, areas of collaboration, etc. I can see three separate categories:
  1. Making sure we have good core articles for each "entity"
  2. Making sure we have good coverage of major international issues concerning the Caribbean - like the Vieques issue.
  3. Making sure we have adequate input into articles which touch on the Caribbean broadly - Pan Caribbean politican and social movements, information technology infrastructure, trade and border issues, etc.

  • The Question is do we really need a portal now or are there more important things that need to be dealt with? I think we first need to make sure the basic country articles are up to speed, then we should worry about grouping them together and running the portal, which seemingly takes a bit of work. But, thats just my opinion.

  • Caribbean and West Indies and Antilles is not actually the same as the portal claims. West Indies has also several meanings. The Spanish used the expression Indias Occidentales (West Indies) to refer to the Americas as a whole, whereas the British used it to refer to their small Caribbean colonies or the Lesser Antilles. I'd prefer you guys to use the word Antilles if you only want to refer to the islands and exclude the rest, also to use the language in a more meaningful and less politicised way. You must know that Venezuela and Colombia both claim to be the most Caribbean places on earth. They have a strong argument to claim that, their coast lines on the Caribbean Sea are the longest of any other nation and they both have island territories on the Caribbean sea. Claiming that a few islands of the Caribbean are the entire Caribbean is to give credit to divisions established by the colonialists for political purposes. --tequendamia 03:59, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

A lot of article son Saint Lucian politicians were "batch translated" from Spanish earlier this month, and need work converting them into English (typical "babelfish"-like translation, many phrases that obviously don't mean what they did in Spanish). I just did a bit of clean-up work on the Arecibo, Puerto Rico article. I found a couple of odd statements on that page that I do not know how to fix. They concern the local airport and basketball team. Could someone familiar with Arecibo please look at my comments on Talk:Arecibo, Puerto Rico and fix these? If anyone has freely licensed pictures of anything to do with the West Indian cricket team - players, grounds, crowdshots, whatever - could they let me know. I was wondering if we should have something like this Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Australia for Caribbean articles up for deletion. See also Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting. It would be interesting to develop a kind of deletion criteria for Caribbean-related articles, which I think differ from the criteria that should be used for, say, United States-related articles. --Kewp (t) 18:29, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

Yes, I know, it's debatable (and much debated) whether Bermuda belongs on this page, but I have a request that you more than many Wikipedians might be able to help with. I was horrified last month to discover that there were only four geography articles about places in Bermuda, and that three of them were stubs. So, I've been "gazetting" the place. There are now 58 articles, plus maps and templates, but (you guessed it) almost all of the articles are stubs. Also, I haven't been there in many years, and much of my information may be out of date. If any of you know anything about the territory, and would be willing to check out the articles in Cat:Geography of Bermuda, it would be very useful! Grutness...wha? 01:18, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

  • Bermuda and Cayman are both a bit tricky. They can't make up their minds if they are in or out. Legis 15:29, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
  • But isn't Cayman totally within the Caribbean Sea? I don't think there's any doubt that they are Caribbean.

They have just undergone constitutional reform -- since the day before yesterday, their head of government is not Chief Minister any longer, but Premier instead... Does this also mean that T&CI status is at par with Bermuda's now, meaning they have the highest level of self-government possible? The Dominican Republic article needs a good going over by a group of editors. It has some really poor prose, such as "about 70% of all Dominicans are mixed" - "The Dominican Republic is a Hispanic country, therefore, as with all Hispanic countries in the Americas, its culture and people is derived predominantly from Spain" - "Democracy is not something that is born overnight, it takes time to learn its rewards and even more importantly; tolerate its hardships" and on and on. I wonder if editors could take a moment to comb that article into better shape.--Zleitzen 11:01, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

There is now a proposed WikiProject for the Caribbean area, including all the states and territories of the Caribbean, at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals#Caribbean. Interested parties should add their names there so we can determine if there is enough interest to start such a project in earnest. I note that there already are a few projects dealing with specific areas of the Caribbean, and this project has no intention of "horning on" on their territory, or that of any WikiProjects which may develop subsequently.   • Merge to List of Puerto Rico Highways - whether or not the pattern was intentional, it clearly exists. We can say "routes in this range are in this region" without it being original research because we have a map that shows all routes.   • Merge per NE2. I was about to say what he said, pretty much word for word, but he beat me to it. Most of the articles on state highway systems in the US have a section on the numbering pattern, and the vast majority of these (as far as I've seen) are unreferenced. I haven't found the page on WSDOT's website yet that explains why the highways are numbered the way they are, probably because it doesn't exist. But any state map can be used as a reference to say that a pattern exists. That being said, calling it a "system" and having a separate article like this is neologism-ish, and largely unnecessary. When/if it is merged, it can probably be condensed a good deal. -- Kéiryn (talk) 15:18, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

      • It's not original research to say "all three-digit routes beginning in 4 are in Foo County" if this is verifiable on a map. It's similarly not original research to say "North Bar is a town north of Bar" even if we don't have a source other than a map that shows that relation, or to say something as simple as what the highest route number in a state is. --NE2 16:25, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

When I saw the way the reference was placed, and that it was pointing to "FHWA Route Log and Finder List", I made a false assumption that it was referencing just the list of routes.           • United States Numbered Highways does have this "problem".     Format, prose, lack of sufficient information, etc. I think that this could be reused elsewhere at List of Puerto Rico Highways or perhaps split it off to something like List of State Highways in Kentucky.
