[edit] The Rape of Ms. Marvel

Hi! I just wanted to say that I really appreciated reading your essay (assuming this is you, and not just someone who chose the same name). I'm only 33 and wasn't reading comics in 1980, so I missed the whole thing the first time around (and honestly, at age 5 could I have possibly understood anyway?) I have never read the Avengers circa #200, so I can't really comment on that. However, several years ago I did pick up Avengers Annual #10 (hey, first appearance of Rogue, and the thing was near-mint for a good price all things considered!) and I really enjoyed the story and art. However, I always did find that part with Carol Danvers to be peculiar. I didn't know the context of what she was referring to, but it did sound kind of heavy. Your article clears that up for me (this was not the first time I read it), and puts things in perspective.

I have always enjoyed Claremont's writing on the X-Men (in the 80s/90s more than nowadays, although X-Treme X-Men was a nice throwback to the good ol' days) and I remember seeing people commenting on his treatment of women in comics and giving that a lot of thought. His women were always well-rounded characters, and were often a lot more powerful than the men (compare Phoenix and Storm to, say Colossus and Nightcrawler) and I definitely gave that a lot of thought as well. I have always wanted to write comics myself, and if I were to do that I would endeavor to give the female characters some more even ground than what you typically see. Same thing with various ethnic groups too, to be honest - even now, how many new characters are white men compared to anything else? Come on, this is the day and age where Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton are actually being taken seriously as presidential candidates, and it's time the rest of the country acknowledged that the times, they are a-changing.

Anyways, I'm probably preaching to the choir, so enough ranting.  ;) I just saw you editing, so I thought I would comment! BOZ (talk) 15:42, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
