[edit] Punk Globe Magazine

[edit] History

Punk Globe, is a fanzine and online magazine, started by Ginger Coyote, in July 1977. It was originally distributed on xeroxed pages folded together. After its first year anniversary, Chris Coyle, Manager for SVT, a notable San Francisco-based punk band at the time, suggested a newsprint format. As Ginger Coyote wrote on the website, "We found Grant Printing--a company owned by the influential Fang Family, publishers of Asian Week and the San Francisco Independent Community newspapers (and for a while, the San Francisco Examiner)--for the following 7 years. For our last 2 years, the magazine upgraded to heavier stock white paper printed at SF Litho."

(shown on the right).

It was published it as a fanzine until 1989, when she started a band called White Trash Debutantes.

The content of Punk Globe included a calendar of events, gossip, interviews, record reviews, photos, artwork, the Punk Of the Month Award; and the hilarious advice column, "Ask Sonny Bono."

According to its publisher, "The magazine was lighthearted and a lot of fun... It became a hit, and in the last few years, 25,000 copies were being printed."

Punk Globe also has had its celebrity contributors: Bebe Buell was Associate Editor :and writer, Jello Biafra wrote record reviews under the name "The Taste Police;" and Dorothy Lyman, Robert Crumb, Liz Derringer, Joe Jackson, Jon Gries, Lisa Zane, Matt Dillon, Ernie Townsend, Andrew Stevens, Judd Nelson, John Synder, Mark Arnold, and Courtney Love, and Billy Gould all provided artwork, articles or photos.

The online version of Punk Globe surfaced in 2005, and contains some of the old content--articles, ads, artwork, photos and letters from past Punk Globe issues--mixed in with totally new artwork and photographs, gossip, news, interviews, record CD, DVD, film and book reviews.

According to Ginger Coyote, the website gets approximately 8,000 hits per day.

Newer additions are is the Punk Globe Forum and the myspace page.

The White Trash Debutantes are an American rock band formed in 1989. [2].

[edit] Origins

With a few possible exceptions, no band has destroyed the male-dominated mythos of punk rock, and dealt with issues of gender equality and transcendence with as much fun and lighheartedness as The White Trash Debutantes.

One critic wrote: "Punk rock has always had its socio-political agitators as well as bands that simply wanted to entertain; White Trash Debutantes are a perfect example of the latter."[3]

Perhaps the political undepinnings of White Trash Debutantes message are not so obvious. A careful listening to their music will betray a committment to mindless rebellion, sexual deviance, and solipsism: Their music abuts head-on with the rush toward fascism, the lack of compassion, and the aimless goals of the 'American Dream.'

The White Trash Debutantes first debuted at San Francisco's Covered Wagon Saloon on October 18, 1989 for a birthday party for Punk Globe Editor and Debutante Ginger Coyote.[4]

Joey Ramone invited them to partake in his "Circus Of the Perverse" party in New York City playing with the likes of Debbie Harry, Bebe Buell, Ronnie Spector, Lemmy (Motorhead) and the Ramones in 1990.[5]

[edit] Awards

The White Trash Debutantes won the Rockies award for "Best Punk Band 2003" and the "Best Punk Band 2004" at the Rock City News Awards.[8]

White Trash Debutantes were named "Best 2004 Underground Punk Band" and Ginger Coyote "Best 2004 Underground Diva" by Demons In Exile[9].

[edit] Noteworthy Events

Novelist Danielle Steel asked Ginger Coyote to contribute to her book "His Bright Light" which details her son's (the late Nick Traina) battle with being bipolar. The band wrote and recorded the song in the memory of the late Nick Traina.[10]

Ginger Coyote and Jayne County recorded two songs together in June 2006--"Rock n Roll Republikkkan(renamed from "Punk Rock Republican")," in which Jayne and Ginger name some well known 'Republikkkans' in the music industry; "Trans-Generation," a song written by Jayne County as an anthem for those with gender identity issues.[11]

White Trash Debutantes played a memorial tribute for the late Dirk Dirksen "The Pope Of Punk" at The Great American Music Hall along with Jello Biafra and many others.[12]

The band has toured the United States, Canada, Mexico and Japan playing with such notables as Rancid, the Ramones, Green Day, Blondie and The Offspring.

The band generated a lot of publicity when they invited notorious former Olympic skater Tonya Harding to join the band. [13]

PaperStone, a Certified (FSC, Smartwood, Rainforest Alliance) post-consumer, recyled paper architectural surface material made with 100% petroleum-free, phenolic resins. Water is the predominant solvent. [1] It is usally used in applications for level surfaces--table tops, counters, window sills and door thresholds.

The recycled variety--its principal form-- comes in two series or standards: "original" made from 50% post consumer water and recycled paper; and "certified," 100% post consumer waste. PaperStone made from original paper fiber is also available. [2]
