[edit] faculty links - lakehead university

Stop removing useful information on the mcmaster page. Listing the faculties and hospitals is appropriate but NOT adding every department and schools. (If you had at least taken a look at Toronto, Queens and Western. They all follow this trend). You added every department and schools for Lakehead university that is why I removed some of the links. Your childish behaviour is uncalled for. It seems you think I have attacked "your page" and then you proceeded to remove appropriate information on the mcmaster page. If you continue to do this, you will be reported to an administrator. Note: this IP address is used by multiple users therefore any vandalism done on this address does not represent everyone who is using wiki. 70.27.182.175 21:49, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Response for 70.27.182.175

FYI: I did look at those Wikis. But there is no reason why Lakehead must follow this trend. You point to UT, Queens, Western only. But how about the other 16 Ontario Universities that don't follow your "special" model. In the same suit, why aren't all Canadaian University following one template? Perhaps you should make this template if you're such a strong believer in it.

I read over this site that 70.27.182.175 pointed me to and from my perspective, the things I corrected on the McMaster page adhere to my interpretation of the Wiki "what is, what isn't". Maybe you should give it a read yourself.

I'm sure 70.27.182.175 is accessed by multiple users but I'm positive that only you and a few other individuals are updating and keeping such a tight track on the McMaster and Lakehead wiki's and that's why you're hiding behind this IP. That's why you think I'm attacking YOU. I'm sure the Administrators have no problem banning your IP which will effectively mess it up for everyone.

UT, Queens, McMaster are G-10. Lakehead is not. What do you know about Lakehead? You're not an administrator. You're not even a member. Lakehead is unique in that it offers programs that other Canadian universities do not. That is why it is an amalgamation of what things you do not see on the UT, Queens, and McMaster Wiki.

Your threats are not appreciated and you may report to an administrator whatever you feel is inappropriate. You don't need to "warn me of it" and stop reverting what I find is appropriate to the Lakehead Wiki. You most certainly are no authority on Universities, Wiki's or anything for what I'm concerned with. Let's not be childish over such a silly matter

First of all I'm not initiating any type of threat, just making a statement. I removed some links because it didn't follow the wikipedia guidelines. I pointed to Queens, UofT and Western as an example. I'm sure the rest of them follow this rule as well but one cannot make sure all of them are like that.
The faculties/hospitals/colleges/residences or anything relevant should be listed but not every department and school because that would be just too cumbersome. This isn't something I made up nor it is "my special model". I don't question whether Lakehead offers unique programs but that is not the point.
I don't see whether I keep track on certain pages is your concern. I know that you keep track of the Lakehead page and that ain't my business either. But it seems I removed some links on the Lakehead page somehow triggered hostility from you. I never said you were attacking "ME"; the mcmaster page ain't mine but isn't it such a big coincidence that you had to remove links from the mcmaster page because I had made the most edits there?
"stop reverting what I find is appropriate to the Lakehead Wiki. You most certainly are no authority on Universities, Wiki's or anything for what I'm concerned with."
Yes, I have no authority on universities but neither do you. That said, being a member doesn't mean you have more authority than a non-registered user either. stop reverting what I find is appropriate to the Lakehead Wiki means that I cannot change it just because you find it appropriate? "You most certainly are no authority on Universities, Wiki's or anything for what I'm concerned with." You have just contradicted yourself.
I think this issue has gone out of hand and I most definately do not want to start a "Wiki War". Have a nice day. 70.27.182.175 03:04, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] response

Hi,
If you don't call that a threat, I really would question how you would interpret that. It's not merely a "statement" as it's worded harshly.

If you continue to do this, you will be reported to an administrator. Note: this IP address is used by multiple users therefore any vandalism done on this address does not represent everyone who is using wiki.

Especially since you draw attention to the fact that you're unregistered and share a common IP with some others.

Regardless of this, You said The faculties/hospitals/colleges/residences or anything relevant should be listed but not every department and school because that would be just too cumbersome. and you might have a point. Personally, I don't find it "cumbersome". How much more "cumbersome" is it for you to go through a list of external links such as the one on the McMaster page? Perhaps I find that combersome? I'm sure you've read this over and over before: Wikipedia is not a mirror or a repository of links, images, or media files

"Wikipedia is neither a mirror nor a repository of links, images, or media files. All content added to Wikipedia may have to be edited mercilessly to be included in the encyclopedia. By submitting any content, you agree to release it for free use under the GNU FDL. 2 Wikipedia articles are not... Mere collections of external links or Internet directories. There is nothing wrong with adding a list of content-relevant links to an article; however, excessive lists can dwarf articles and detract from the purpose of Wikipedia."

And as you can see, that is how I interpreted the McMaster page- An excessive list of external links. Since I was referenced by a user 70.27.182.175 (perhaps you) to check out the McMaster, Queens, UT pages, and the "what's allowed and not allowed" page, I only felt obligated to trim the parts that didn't adhere to this rule on the first page that I visited. You interpreted that as a childish attack and I regret that you do. I find no difference whether to list a hospital or a department or school. Listing is listing. Information is information. Is something irrelavant because it doesn't exist on another site? Why is it appropriate for other Canadian Universities to list departments and schools as well as other "cumbersome" information?

True, members don't have additional authority above non-members. You very well may be a seasoned user. As you can tell, I am not an authority on wiki's, uni's either but what I do know is that showing that my adds/rv's won't kill anyone.

The one person per year that visits the Lakehead page might actually appreciate the added information that you're so bent on keeping out. Cheers, Carl

The reason why I explicitly stated this IP was used by multiple users is I did not want one to interpret this address as for vandalism and anything coming from this account is bad. As you might have thought on your first comment on my edits Sorry but your edits are not appreciated.
The issue of excessive links; "what wikipedia is not -WIN" could be subjective and some people, like you, have mis-interpret the meaning of it. It is generally recognised that if there are excessive links in a single catagory or related sub-catagory it is considered as cumbersome. Generally, departments and schools are sub-catagories of the main catagory of "Faculty". This is why leaving ONLY the faculty page is necessary. The rest is sufficient but not necessary. It also depends how one presents information. (If it is a list or just paragraphs). The mcmaster page has different catagories which are short and precise. It just happens that different links are followed right after the other in which "you think are cumbersome"
I agree, what is irrelevant on one university page does not necessarily mean it is irrelevant on another. However, there is a general trend that all Ontario universities follow. The Lakehead university page is rather new and you have contributed most of information on the page now. You think the removal of some links have somehow violated your efforts in writing that information. 70.27.182.175 17:01, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] response

I can understand why you don't want anyone to interpret your IP as for vandalism because that IP as it stands is on it's last thread. I've tracked the history of that IP's edits and from what I've seen, some edits were considered vandalism. That is what strikes me as perculiar. If you have a genuine interest in contributing, why would you attach your identity to a user IP that has continuously been on the, dare I say, "naughty list" - an IP that has caught the attention of Admins numerous times. (To me, any user of 70.27.182.175 is guilty of changing "effort" to "rimjobs" as 70.27.182.175 leads back to a Roger's subscriber line)

As a result, my interpretation of your speedy edits are hostile attacks. Given the circumstances, user 70.27.182.175 doesn't have much integrity. Moreover, I see no reason why any entity has to govern the way any Ontario university wiki has to look, feel, or present itself. On top of that, the general feeling at Lakehead is that Thunder Bay feels like it belongs more to "Manitoba" than "Ontario"...but that's beside the point ;)

You may feel that you have compromised my efforts, however that is not the case. I feel the information you're bent on keeping out is benificial and maybe useful. I feel that you have instead compromised any researcher looking for information. The Lakehead page is not a long or large page that's cumbersome to go through.

peace :) Carl

You have strayed off the point, nevertheless the page looks right now. 70.27.182.175 02:47, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] huh?

what was the main point you are refering to and what is your point? Are you cautiously dodging the other issues brought up here? Could you address these issues as to shed some light on the prior vandalism attempts by your IP?

In any case, i still dont see how the Lakehead/McMaster page "looks right". They both still look a little off. Carl

[edit] Well well

The interest these uni pages have generated creeps me out. At least as the holidays come to and end, my hands will be busy working out life's real troubles. My main concern is, if there is so much interest, how come so many smaller Ont. university wiki's are so hurting?

Interesting stance some take on wiki management.

farewell & good day

Carl

[edit] Why so few Wikipedians are engineers?

I am trying to understand why there are so few Wikipedians who are graduate engineers. Once I get a grasp on that, perhaps I may be able to formulate some ideas on how to attract more experienced engineers to become Wikipedians. It would be very helpful if you would respond to these a few questions:

  • Are you a university graduate engineer?
  • Please indicate in which of these engineering disciplines you obtained your degree:
    1. Aeronautical or aerospace engineering
    2. Bioengineer or biological engineering
    3. Chemical engineering
    4. Civil engineering
    5. Electrical engineering
    6. Environmental engineering
    7. Mechanical engineering
    8. Petroleum engineering
    9. Other
  • In what year did you obtain your degree?
  • What attracted you to participate in Wikipedia?

If you would rather not answer these questions on your Talk page, then you may respond on my User talk:mbeychok page. Or you may respond to me via Wikipedia's email which I have enabled on my User:mbeychok page.

If you would rather not respond at all, that's fine also. Regards, - mbeychok 04:28, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WP:CVU status

The Wikipedia:Counter-Vandalism Unit project is under consideration to be moved to {{inactive}} and/or {{historical}} status. Another proposal is to delete or redirect the project. You have been identified as a project member and your input as to this matter would be welcomed at WT:CVU#Inactive.3F and at the deletion debate. Thank you!
