The first part of the article tells us that the term was first applied to the Egyptian symbol by soldiers. Assuming these are the soldiers of Napoleans foray into Egypt C. 1800 (where French soldiers common in Egypt before then?) this seems unlikely given the term's prior use in europe for a similar symbol. Coincidence or folk etymolgy?
