[edit] Population Growth and Number of Pubs

I know Carrick-on-Shannon is a growing town, butI think it unlikely that the population will grow to 10,000 by 2010. I looked, but I couldn't find any reference to this anywhere else.

According to the Social Economic and Cultural Strategy for Co. Leitrim 2002-2012 (Page 13, para 2.2.2 Demography), a document produced by Leitrim County Development Board (presumably in 2002), Carrick-on-Shannon is its biggest centre of population with approximately 1,900 people.
According to Census 2006 - Preliminary Report (Table 4, Page 73) from the CSO, the population of Carrick town grew from 2,663 in 2002, to 3,484 in 2006, while that of the total Carrick rural area grew from 6,669 to 8,192 in the same period (This area includes Drumsna (pop. growth from 532 in '02 to 593 in '06), Drumshanbo (from 977 to 1,062) and Leitrim village (from 618 to 870), among others). The population of Carrick-on-Shannon urban area, then, increased by 824, or 30.9% over a 4-year period. Even if it were to increase by double that for the next 4 years (unlikely, but run with me), the population of Carrick-on-Shannon would then be 5,575. In fact, by my simple calculations, you'd need a population increase of 187% over four years to get to 10,000 by 2010.

Secondly, the quote regarding Carrick-on-Shannon having the highest number of pubs per head of population in Ireland is something I've heard about almost every small-to-medium town in Ireland. I think this quote would need some substantiation.

Definitely can't be substantiated now due to two recent pub closures, (Diffley's and Joe Lowe's) and the increase in population. I'd guess Carrick now has one of the lowest number of pubs per head of population of any small to medium size town. Pity! Roma17 21:06, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
