I thought careening could also be done while the ship was still afloat. It would not be possible to reach the bottom of the vessel but much more of the below water line will be available.

While it is an excellent picture, the boat is upright and I think careening implies lying a vessel on its side for cleaning, caulking, or repairing. Len (talk) 14:14, 22 November 2007 (UTC)
