This motto seems to be sort of bull. I'm sure no-one in Caracas considers that to be a motto.

BTW.... I would like to know how you do to add new pictures. I have crazy pictures of Caracas that show way more about the city as a city than the pics already posted.

We should add info about the barrios and ranchos, it´s really impressive for someone who doesn´t live there

Is there an authoritative source for the extent and population of the metropolitan area? The definition I know has a population of only 3.3 million. I will try and find official sources. Polaron 05:09, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

Here is a definition of the official metropolitan area, which is called Distrito Metropolitano, created in 2000 and composed of Libertador, Baruta, Chacao, El Hatillo, and Sucre. From here and here, the total for the five municipios comprising the Distrito Metropolitano is 2,762,259 (2001 census provisional). From here we find yearly census estimates. The calculated 2005 estimate for Distrito Metropolitano is 3,172,957. I will incorporate this into the article later unless someone can cite an authoritative source for the 5.1 million figure. Also, the surface area is 1,930 sq. km if we exclude Dependencias Federales. Polaron 06:50, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
The only way I could get to 5.1 million is to include the entire states of Miranda, Vargas and D.C. (5.17 million as of 2005). Polaron 17:35, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
The official Met Area is counting only Distrito Metropolitano but the urban agglomeration (including La Guaira, San Antonio, Guarenas-Guatire, etc ) population is 4.7 Million accordingly to citypopulation.de. If the source is considered reliable, we could add this figure JRSP 04:10, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
citypopulation.de seems to be reliable, similar articles use it as a reference already accordingly to this search. JRSP 18:31, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

The longitude of Caracas is specified as 66º 55’ 70’’ W -- degrees, minutes, seconds. I thought that these were all specified in base 60 (Sexagesimal), so 70 doesn't make any sense. What is the correct value?

No offense to those who have worked hardly on improving this article, it is in a much better shape than before, but it still sounds like a touristic article and not like an encyclopedic entry. The best way to get in the right track is to use the structure suggested at Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities:

[edit] Reality: Poverty and Crime

I think this article needs more reality.

Petare is said to have the highest population density of Latin America, since it is estimated to have about 3 million people (not 1 million as referred in article) [citation needed, BID].

I do not have numbers yet, but if someone could help me find the socio-demographic data for Caracas, that indicates how many people are estimated live in Ranchos and Barrios, and the conditions they live in- it would add a lot of reality to the article, and would be more accurate.

Also, Caracas is ranked 2nd in the most dangerous cities in Latin America. (The first one is Recife, Brazil). The CICPC (Cuerpo de Investigaciones Cientificas, Penales y Criminalisticas) affirms that in the country there are 13,400 homicides for every 100,000 habitants. [Citation needs to be confirmed]

Do you mean 134 homicides for every 100,000 habitants. 13400 would be impossible. the highest ever recorded was somewhere around 400 in medellin, but definitely not 13,400.

Yes, a friend of mine from Venezuela tells me of Caracas's crime-ridden reputation. It should definitely be included if anyone has sources.--Loodog 17:38, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

I have tried to clean up the 'History' section. Some sentences were so badly written that the meaning was not clear, and I may have been a little brutal in chopping bits out. What is the population of Caracas proper? It noticed that the 'city' population listed in the info box is actually the population of the entire urban area, and that is not how we list things. Caracas's borders are those of the Capital District, correct? If that is the case, what is the population of just the Capital District?
