Red Orchestra: Carpathian Crosses
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Carpathian Crosses is a first person tactical shooter expansion pack for Red Orchestra: Ostfront which adds the Romanian army to the Eastern Front. Romania was the biggest German ally and supported the German army on the attacks on Odessa and Sevastopol. Parts of the Romanian army secured the north side of Stalingrad. Later in the war the Romanians switched sides and were involved in ousting German forces from their capital, Bucharest. The first public beta of Carpathian Crosses was released on April 11th 2008. Despite bugs with some of the new content it was a well polished release and has received much positive feedback, momentarily reaching the number two spot on Mod DB's most popular PC mods within days of its release.

[edit] Features
- Romanian voice commands: The voice commands were recorded by native Romanian speakers and allow you to use all the commands known from Red Orchestra and more. The Voice commands include accurate voice commands such as "Da, Sa traieşt" which is the Romanian equivalent to "Yes, Sir" as well as tactical ops talk. and other phrases.
- Mortars: The mod implements mortars in a way that allows a certain class to deploy light mortars anywhere on the map where it would be possible to set one up. Aiming will be done by adjusting angle, direction and vents on the mortar. A light mortar crew will carry a certain amount of shells, but can be resupplied by its spotter. The mortar allows for much different gameplay with more options, more strategy, and more teamwork.
- New player models: To represent the Romanian forces new player models are created. An addition to the Soviet forces will be the Naval Soldiers (Morskiye Pekhoti).
Some player models so far are: Soviet standard uniform (From original Red Orchestra), Soviet Black Sea Naval infantry , Soviet padded jackets , Soviet amoeba variations (standard/uban, hooded and non-hooded) , Romanian standard uniforms (summer) in several variations , Romanian standard uniforms (winter) in several variations , Romanian greatcoats , Romanian mountain divisions , and Romanian tankers
- New weapons: Several new weapons have been announced to be included in the mod. So far the Czech-made ZB-30 and the Steyr Hahn 1912 Pistol were announced along with the Orita SMG. Furthermore a new anti-tank weapon, the RPG 40 grenade, will be included. The new weapons added were intended to be the most commonly used in the Romanian army such as the M95 rifle.
Some weapons are: Steyr-Hahn 1912 pistol , M95 Steyr-Mannlicher rifle , M95 Steyr-Mannlicher carbine , MP28 SMG , Orita SMG , ZB-30 LMG , RPG-40 AT grenade , Geballte ladung AT grenade , M39 50mm Mortar, And possibly more to come...
- 4 new vehicles and variants: The mod will feature new tanks on both sides. Currently known to be in are several BT-7 variants and the Czech-made R-2 and French R-35 infantry tank for the Romanians. Beside that, the T-26 tank and the BT-5 will be featured for the soviet side.
Some tank improvements have been made as well: Removed the view shaking for the tank MGs. Armor values depending on lower armor, upper armor and turret. Crew can be killed from penetrating shells. Tanks don't start to burn on overall damage. Engine hits can cause the engine to start burning. The possibility to switch off the engine of the CC tanks. Where applicable: the turret rotation speed is slowed down in case the engine is switched off. This is not relevant for the tanks in CC. Fire from the engine can spread to other areas in the tank like the driver compartment. The sequence and speed are specified per tank. Switching the engine off reduces the possibility that the fire spreads. The main gun sights can be shattered when a shell hits the relevant area. Tanks trigger an event defined in the VehicleFactory when destroyed (usable for mappers).
[edit] Theme
The mod tries to represent the years from 1941 onwards, starting with the battles to drive the Red Army out of the Romanian territory (Bessarabia Campaign), followed by the push towards Odessa, the battles on the Crimea and the battles in the Caucasus Mountains near Nalchik. The mod shows action in many different parts but tries to take the important little battles out of some greater ones such as Dofinovka which was a part of the greater battle for odessa.
[edit] Planned small arms
The ZB-30 was made in the Brno smallarms factory and is considered to be a prototype for the famous British army Bren.
It had a rate of fire of 550 rounds per minute. It carried 20 rounds in a top-mounted magazine and was usually deployed on a bipod. It could, however, also be fired from the hip by its operator. The ZB-30 LMG had a fire selection (auto/single).
[edit] Planned vehicles
Several improvements of the RO damage models are planned to improve tank combat.
