Carville Power Station was a coal-fired power station situated in Wallsend near Newcastle upon Tyne. It was built in 1904 by British electricity engineering consultants Merz & McLellan. The station set the pattern for power station layout and design for most of the twentieth century.[1] The station used 3500KW Parsons steam turbines and was cooled by the River Tyne.[2] At the time of its opening it was the largest power station in the UK. Carville B power station was opened in 1916, and together they supplied power over 60 square miles, from Shilbottle down to Malton in Yorkshire.[3]
