Formerly known as Carta Mundi, Cartamundi is a European playing card manufacturer, based in Turnhout, Belgium. The name of the company in Latin means cards for the world.
The privately-held company, was founded in 1970 as a joint venture between three long-established printing companies: Brepols, Van Genechten and Biermans: since the early 19 th century, Turnhout has been a centre of playing card making. Various graphics companies specialised in the production of playing cards. In 1970, the above mentioned companies joined forces. Their experience and know-how were combined in one joint-venture, with the name of Cartamundi.
The company also maintains manufacturing facilities in Canvey Island (UK), Altenburg (Germany), and Dallas (Texas, USA). Early editions of Wizards of the Coast's Magic: The Gathering and Decipher, Inc.'s Star Trek Customizable Card Game and Star Wars Customizable Card Game, as well as several other games, were printed by the company.
