It is within the Southern Education and Library Board area. The school was opened in 1939 [1]. The principal is Mrs. Anne Cassidy.

In recent years the school had has to cope with increasing enrolment, with many pupils having to use mobile classrooms.[1] In 2000 Education Minister Martin McGuinness announced that the need for a new school building was to be appraised [2]. In 2004 the school received a £2.4 million boost in funding for a new building on an adjacent site though now (in 2007) the government hasn't become involved and pupils are still waiting for any progress to be made. [3]

The school is famous for its involvement and success in GAA. Recently its hurlers won the Tony Carr memorial shield and have reached the finals of numerous indoor tournaments. They reached the South Down final for the last three years and are wishing to compete in it again this year. This was achieved in both outdoor and indoor championships. The footballers won the All County (Down) championship and later in 2008 are going to play in the Ulster Championship.
