Carrboro High School is a suburban non-charter high school located in Carrboro, North Carolina. It is located close to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Carrboro High school is part of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district which contains two other high schools, Chapel Hill High School and East Chapel Hill High School. When the school was being named, controversy existed over whether it should be named Carrboro High School or South Chapel Hill High School, as some parents feared that not including the "prestigious" name associated with the other Chapel Hill schools would hurt their children's chances when applying to college. In addition, there is some debate about its name considering that most of Carrboro High's students come from Chapel Hill and not Carrboro. Its first year of operation was 2007-2008 and its principal is Jeff Thomas, a former vice principal from Chapel Hill High School. It has no seniors, as it is in its first year of existence, but it will operate normally in future years.[1]

[edit] Academics

Carrboro High School offers a number of advanced academic classes, including a number of AP classes. Carrboro High School opened for the 2007-2008 school year without an auditorium, but will still offer a number of performing arts courses and plans to rent local theaters for dramatic productions over the next few years. The auditorium is planned to be built in two years, however due to low budget, the auditorium may not open for several more years. The auditorium would take six months to build, so building would have to continue into the school year, even if it started in the summer. Carrboro High School's roster of courses is not as extensive as the other schools in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district due to its smaller enrollment, but it plans to expand the number of offered courses as enrollment grows.[1]

In addition, some students go to the other local high schools (Chapel Hill High School and East Chapel Hill High School) in order to take specific classes that are not yet offered at CHS.

[edit] Athletics

Carrboro High School is a 2A high school in North Carolina. It offers the same varsity sports as Chapel Hill High School. Carrboro High School has access to a baseball field, a softball field, a track, a gymnasium, and two general practice fields. Carrboro cross-country won the school's first trophy from its second place finish in the Open race at the Tanglewood Invitational, held in Winston Salem[2]. Carrboro field hockey is sometimes credited with the first win for Carrboro High, as the won a game at a tournament over the summer, but it is debatable because it was out of the regular season. Tennis is credited with the first official win, winning in their first match. Marching band won the school's first non-athletic trophy. [1] The school's swim team placed third in the NC 2A state championship meet where Ken Ryan broke the 2A state record for 50 meter free.

[edit] Criticism

After its opening in 2007 there was some criticism about the school on behalf of the students who attend it, many students were extremely dissatisfied with the school, and some were even applying for transfers back to Chapel Hill High School or East Chapel Hill High School. Most of this criticism centers around the perceived lack of freedoms available at the school, in comparisons to the other 2 district schools.
