[edit] Performing Arts
For years Carpinteria High School was home to a musical theatre class, aptly named Muses, through which students were able to learn performance skills and participate in a musical show each semester. But when Jeff McKinnon arrived to teach Performing Arts in 1999, he formed a new drama society called The Company, which acted as an after school program that allowed students to perform in a variety of non-musical plays. From 1999 to 2003 The Company put on a play every semester and experienced great successes within the community, although it changed hands as drama teachers came and went. The plays that were produced include Indians, Crimes of the Heart, Our Town, Dancing at Lughnasa, Macbeth, A Streetcar Named Desire, Of Mice and Men, Steel Magnolias, Bus Stop, and a number of showcases; most of these were directed by the current drama instructor, although some were student directed. In 2002 The Company attended the Twenty-seventh Annual Henry Kemp-Blair Shakespeare Tournament at Chapman University and performed scenes and monologues from their Macbeth (directed by Amy Koers and Kaia Rose). They took home the Best Scene of the Tournament award (with actors Tobias Shaw and Elyse Fults) and Shaw received awards for Outstanding Performance in a Scene and Outstanding Monologue. However, in 2003 The Company and the Performing Arts class were shut down due to budget cuts. Muses still remains, under the direction of Elise Unruh, and continues to do good work, now producing plays as well as musicals.
