From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Caroline Mikkelsen (1906 in Norway) was the first woman to set foot on Antarctica. In the winter of 1934-1935, she accompanied her husband, Captain Klarius Mikkelsen, on an expedition sponsored by Lars Christensen. On February 20, 1935, the expedition made landfall at the Vestfold Hills; she left the ship and participated in building a memorial cairn. A mountain in Antarctica is named for her.[1]
