[edit] Overview

Carol is the "emotional heart" of the Tomorrow People. She is sometimes the voice of reason for The Tomorrow People. Her character often serves as a contrast to John's scientific nature. When Stephen was going through his "breakout", it was Carol who appeared to him and guided him through it.[1]

[edit] Character development

[edit] Helping Stephen

Along with John and Kenny, Carol had been monitoring Stephen, as he had been unconsciously tuning into their thoughts, via his telepathy.[1] When Stephen collapses and is taken to hospital, John sends Carol to help him "breakout". Carol appears in Stephen's room and begins explaining about the voices he has been hearing, and that he is part of a new stage in human evolution. She tells him that he is Homo superior, a Tomorrow Person, and that this new species of humans have special powers and are unable to unintentionally kill.[1] After telling Stephen some more about the Tomorrow People she prepares to leave, but two men enter the room and tell her that Stephen is to be prepped for an operation. Carol says she doesn't believe them and tells Stephen to escape, in the struggle both Carol and Stephen are hit by stun guns. Carol is able to retrieve an amulet from one of the men before she is hit.[1] When John loses telepathic contact with Carol he jaunts to the hospital to find her unconscious on the floor. He picks her up and TIM jaunts them back to The Lab. Back at The Lab she tells John that Stephen has been kidnapped and shows John an amulet she managed to get from one of the men who took him.[2] Carol comments that she is sure she has seen the amulet in the news recently. She and John go through some of the previous newpapers and determine that a man named Jedikiah must be responsible for the kidnap of Stephen, and that it is likely he is being held at Bentham Hall. The three Tomorrow People jaunt to the house and rescue Stephen.[2] During the night Stephen, under mind control, shuts down power to TIM. Carol wakes with a feeling that something has happened. She jaunts to John's house and tells him that she had to jaunt under her own power to get there.[3] John and Carol jaunt their way back to The Lab, they see some kind of device and thinking it's a trap jaunt out. The device explodes and they are trapped in hyperspace. After a few minutes they both begin to feel sleepy, then Carol notices John's arm has started to disappear. John explains that hyperspace is trying to reject them because they don't belong there. Meanwhile Kenny and Stephen manage to get them back, but Jedikiah kidnaps Kenny.[3] John, Carol and Stephen use the mind link to find out who switched TIM of the night before. They find out that Stephen had been hypnotised by the Cyclops. They jaunt back to the house where Stephen was kept to look for Kenny.[4] While inside they hear a strange ticking sound and John investigates. He says that the ticking is from a timing device and orders Carol and Stephen to jaunt out, and the bomb goes off. Back at The Lab, they are contacted by the Cyclops with co-ordinates to transport to.[5] Carol is left behind when John and Stephen are jaunted up to the Cyclops' spaceship. She is then jaunted to different co-ordinates, when she arrives she sees the robot Jedikiah and shoots him with her stun gun. Jedikiah then damages part of the ship, causing some destruction. She finds John and Stephen and they go looking for Kenny. They free Kenny, Ginge and Lefty.[5] John, Carol and Stephen meet the Cyclops, who tells them he needed Telepaths to control his ship. The Cyclops tells them that he is running out of atmosphere, and Carol tells John that they must help the Cyclops or he will die. John manages to get the Cyclops home by jaunting him on and off a passing ship. With the Cyclops now safe, John and Carol return to The Lab leaving Jedikiah onboard the spaceship as it explodes.[5]

[edit] Carol's departure

After the Tomorrow People's adventure against the Spidron, and saving the Earth from destruction, Carol, along with Kenny left the Tomorrow People and Earth. They both joined Overmind, a group that advises the Galactic Council as an ambassador. While working for the Council she fell in love with an Andonesian ambassador.

[edit] Powers and abilities

Like other Tomorrow People Carol possesses various psychic abilities. The primary powers of all Telepaths are "jaunting", the ability to instantaneously transport oneself from one place to another, telepathy, the ability to read the minds of other Tomorrow People and telekinesis, the ability to move objects with the power of the mind. Telepaths can also use their teleportation abilities to teleport other inanimate objects.[3][6] A barrier which exists in the minds of all Telepaths, The Prime Barrier, prevents them from deliberately killing any living organism.[1][7]
