Carlos Southwell was captain of the St Lucian national team which famously won the Popham Trophy in 1972, open to the Windward Islands of the West Indies. Southwell earned the nickname of 'Ball' after Alan Ball, the tenacious Everton midfielder who helped England win the World Cup in 1966 and whose style of play he mirrored.
