Carlos Zambrano is an undisputed starter on the FC Schalke 04 U-19 team, and is the captain, a great merit considering that at that age group captaincy usually goes to a native-born player. He went to FC Schalke 04 at the age of 16, after playing in the U-17 World Cup in 2005, with Peru as hosts.[1] He immediately became a cornerstone on defense and an undisputed starter for the U-19 team and scored quite a few goals[2], and while he played, in the first 5 games, Schalke 04 received no goals, until the sixth match in which he was out on injury.

He has been compared with FC Bayern Munich defender Lucio for his style of play and great defense, offense, and speed.[3] He has played three friendlies with the FC Schalke 04 first team so far, and has been told he is very good by team members from Schalke 04 such as Dario Rodriguez.[4]

He is currently being considered by Peruvian coach "Chemo" del Solar for the South American World Cup Qualifiers, and he even went to see him, and 3 other Peruvians in Europe(Andres Vasquez, Roberto Merino , and Rinaldo Cruzado), play. On November 10, 2007, he was promoted to the FC Schalke 04 first team, and sat as an unused sub. He signed a four year contract with FC Schalke 04 recently.

On March 26, 2008 he had his debut in the senior Peruvian National Team side, in a friendly against Costa Rica. Zambrano started the match and scored a goal in the 45'th minute, having a very good game and becoming the best defender despite the fact it was his debut and that he was playing with new players who were being tried out in the Peru national football team just like him (Among the players who were not present was the regular starting defender from Sporting Braga, Alberto Rodriguez). He will likely be an undisputed starter alongside Alberto Rodriguez after the suspension for 1.5 years of Santiago Acasiete the other defensive starter. He has proven to be a great promise for the Peruvian National Team and for his club FC Schalke 04.
