Carlin Tunnel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Carlin Tunnel is a dual bore Interstate highway tunnel east of Carlin, in Elko County, Nevada, USA. There are also two separate mainline railroad tunnels at the site, both located to the south of, and parallel to, the freeway. These railroad bores formerly carried competing lines but are now both part of the Union Pacific system, presently being used to facilitate uninterrupted rail traffic in opposite directions. I-80 crosses the Humboldt River at both ends of the highway tunnels, the first of which was originally built so that US 40 could avoid following a sharp loop in that stream. Later, a second bore was constructed to facilitate the replacement of US 40 by the current Interstate 80 freeway.
