Carl, or Karl, is a Scandinavian name originating from old Norse, basically meaning "free man" or just "man". This word remains in contemporary Swedish and Icelandic. In Sweden, Karl was reserved for kings[citation needed]. Several Swedish kings have borne the name, among them today's ruler Carl XVI Gustav.
