The Caregiver is a fictional character appearing in the Marvel Comics universe. She is one of the Elders of the Universe. Like all Elders, she is devoted to a single pursuit, which in her case is nurturing beings that she defines as "cosmologically significant".
[edit] Fictional character biography
The Caregiver first appeared to provide aid to the cosmic entity known as Origin. Origin was gestating a new physical incarnation within an enormous embryo sac floating in deep space. The sac had been ruptured and Caregiver used her power primordial to heal the damage[1]. She remained with Origin, determined to attend to its safety until its birth. Eventually other Elders arrived to examine the cosmic phenomenon. Quasar was investigating the sac for reasons of his own and, after a skirmish with the The Possessor and The Obliterator, subsequently lost his protection from the rigors of space. The Caregiver saved Quasar's life by passing him through the sac's membrane, wherein he was able to breathe and recover[2].
Quasar later sought the Caregiver's aid in curing his mother's cancer. She explained that she was unable to help as his mother was not a being of cosmoligical significance[3]. It was not made clear as to whether she declined because of a personal creed or because her powers are incapable of rendering aid to ordinary mortals.
