Carduus crispus or Welted thistle is a member of the daisy family Asteraceae. It is a favorite foodplant of caterpillars of the Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui), which derives its specific name from their preference for thistles. It's also said to hold alterative and anodyne properties in it's roots.
