Cardita aoteana is a bivalve mollusc of the family Carditidae, endemic to New Zealand including the Chatham Islands and southern offshore islands, from low tide to depths of about 185 m.

The shell is rather large and solid, very inequilateral, narrowly rounded at the short anterior end, and broadly rounded or winged posteriorly. Sculpture consists of about 14 radial ribs, seven from the posterior-dorsal end, large, rounded, and coarsely scaly, the remainder much weaker.

Coloration is yellowish-brown to chestnut, and the interior is white.

Length is up to 35 mm, and thickness 22 mm.

A similar but smaller species, Cardita brookesi, is found only around the north east coast of the North Island.
