Cardiopharynx is a monotypic cichlid genus. The single species, Cardiopharynx schoutedeni, is a semi-pelagic, schooling fish endemic to Lake Tanganyika in east Africa. This fish is purely freshwater, and prefers temperatures of 23 – 28°C. It can be deemed a tropical fish. It has a high survival rate, and its populations can double in under 15 months time. Sizes of schools can reach several hundred fish. This fish is completely harmless to human life.
