Cardinal Gibbons High School is a private, Roman Catholic, coeducational, secondary day school located in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. It is the only Diocesan Catholic high school in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Raleigh.

[edit] History

Originally founded in 1909, the school has had a series of administrations including three religious orders, most recently the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn. Since the Brothers departed two years ago, Cardinal Gibbons has been run by layman Jason D. Curtis who runs the school to reflect its mission: to form men and women of faith, service, and leadership in church and community.

[edit] Athletics

Cardinal Gibbons has a history of excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts. The school is recognized as one of the top 50 Catholic High Schools in the nation. Seventy current students and recent graduates were named AP Scholars by the College Board. Seventeen student-artists received 21 Gold and Silver Key Awards at the 2008 Scholastic Art Awards for Eastern/Central North Carolina. In the two years since its acceptance into the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) as a Class 2A school, Cardinal Gibbons has maintained that tradition of excellence. In the 2006-2007 school year Cardinal Gibbons captured eight state championship titles as well as the NC Wachovia Cup, its sixth since 2001. In the 2007-2008 school year, all but one Cardinal Gibbons athletic team made the NCHSAA playoffs, including the baseball team for the first time since joining the public school league. Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker proclaimed December 4, 2007 as Cardinal Gibbons Champions Day. Cardinal Gibbons also has a state-of-the-art Physical Fitness Center, thanks to the generosity of an alumnus and his family.
