Carbondale Township is a township in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania and is respectively named for the adjoining city of Carbondale. The township is located near Scranton. The population was 1,008 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 13.9 square miles (36.1 km²), of which, 13.7 square miles (35.5 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.6 km²) of it (1.65%) is water.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,008 people, 411 households, and 277 families residing in the township. The population density was 73.6 people per square mile (28.4/km²). There were 433 housing units at an average density of 31.6/sq mi (12.2/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 99.90% White, 0.10% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.69% of the population.
There were 411 households out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.0% were married couples living together, 10.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.6% were non-families. 27.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the township the population was spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 100.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.6 males.
The median income for a household in the township was $39,750, and the median income for a family was $51,250. Males had a median income of $33,015 versus $20,982 for females. The per capita income for the township was $19,301. About 6.5% of families and 7.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.0% of those under age 18 and 4.7% of those age 65 or over.
