A new flavor of SALT

Hello, I'm dropping you a note because you are listed on Wikipedia:Protected titles/Specific Admin as an admin that is maintaining a personal SALT page. Recent software updates now allow deleted pages to be protected just like other pages. Please consider migrating any pages on your personal list to normal protections, and clearing them off of your list. There still may be situations where a personal list may be the best way to handle a page though. Thank you, — xaosflux Talk 02:50, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Paperboy - The Nine Yards.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Paperboy - The Nine Yards.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 17:00, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

User:Truthiness4000

Hi there; you will not remember, but about 9 months ago, when I received the mop & bucket, you offered to advise me if I needed. I would appreciate advice now. This user, on whose talkpage you have recently posted, is asking to be unblocked. He has at least three accounts, and his request seems to me to lack substance. But he is very persistent. In your opinion, am I right to refuse (as I have done) to unblock. (As his page is fully protected, he has spoken to me by e-mail.) --Anthony.bradbury"talk" 21:31, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

This is a troll account known to abuse multiple accounts and do nothing but attempt to disrupt the community. I suspect that if the emails persist that this person will find the ability to send further emails will be restricted. Can't sleep, clown will eat me 08:40, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. Since my first note to you he has e-mailed me again, using (accidentally, I suspect) a different username. Had he done so earlier, I would not have felt the need for advice! --Anthony.bradbury"talk" 12:21, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Query on 207.69.137.15

Hello. Just curious as to what happened with 207.69.137.15 (talk · contribs) today. The block log shows you applied a six month block, however I cannot find a vandalism report and the talk page history only shows two warnings in the past 106 days, and those were just a {{uw-test1}} and {{uw-vandalism1}}. What happened to give this IP such a large block, especially since their previous block was for 24 hours, and even that was eight months ago? I am also confused because while you did not post a block notice, all the prior contents on the IP's talk page (including the ISP header that said this address is in one of EarthLink's dynamic ranges) were removed with an edit summary noting "archived old warnings" [1] ... however I cannot seem to find such an archive.

Thanks in advance for your assistance in helping me understand the situation here. I want to make sure that I am blocking anonymous vandals correctly, and cases like this were not covered in New admin school. Thank you, Kralizec! (talk) 02:18, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

A standard {{anon block}} was issued due to the extensive history of abuse and previous blocks. It also helps prevent the honest contributors from being caught by autoblocks. Can't sleep, clown will eat me 05:17, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Requesting Advice

Hi, I have just found a few suspicious accounts. I was getting back into editing after a long wikibreak so I checked up on a few pages I used to edit on. I noticed an edit war and threw my two cents in, usual stuff. However I noticed that the user who added the section causing the war was the head of a middle school book club (according to the user page) of 8 users. It turns out that the other 7 users had exactly the same user and user talk page. I thought they were sockpuppets so I checked their contributions. Only 3 of the 7 had contributions. Then I checked the logs. 6 of the 7 were created within minutes of each other (the last one was created a few hours later the same day). Should I take action or should I wait a few days and see what happens? Typer525 Talk 06:16, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Update: A few accounts have been added to this club. However it appears that this is not a sockpuppet situation; the group appears genuine. However, the existence of accounts without contributions is troubling. Suggestions on further action? Typer525 Talk 00:05, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
I've sent you an email regarding this issue. Can't sleep, clown will eat me 05:13, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

School IPs

Is there any way to deal with schools that have multiple IPs. For example, I've come across 5 IPs belonging to the Indiana Department of Education (165.139.160.4, 165.138.173.212, 170.185.191.28, 165.138.211.1, and 165.138.54.182). Is it ok to somehow find all the IPs used by the school and block them or do they have to be done case by case? Spellcast (talk) 19:39, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

That's a good question. WikiScanner might be able to provide some insight as to what IP addresses are being used by that and other organizations. Can't sleep, clown will eat me 19:41, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
If you don't mind, I've got a few others. I realised I kept seeing the same schools but with different IPs.

You don't have to do anything if you don't want. Just thought I'd bring this to your attention for a possible range block. Spellcast (talk) 20:23, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Closure of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of recent automobile models by type

Please can you look at this again, I requested clarification and none was forthcoming, I believe the delete votes are misguided in their belief that this information is duplicated elsewhere MickMacNee (talk) 21:04, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

In absence of comment, An editor has asked for a deletion review of List of recent automobile models by type. Since you closed the deletion discussion for this article, speedy-deleted it, or were otherwise interested in the article, you might want to participate in the deletion review.

Can you archive this page please

Pretty user-unfriendly in it's current length don't you think? MickMacNee (talk) 21:07, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Revert of my edit in Jesuit High School (Portland, Oregon)

I'm sorry, but I'm a bit perplexed as to why you reverted my edit here. Did you read my rationale on the talk page? In particular, the "number one athletic program in the nation" claim is clearly noted in the SI article linked at the bottom of the page.

Block time?

I've just blocked 129.71.148.254 for a year for vandalism. You were the last admin to block the IP, and therefore I'm asking you: is a full year too long of a block time for an IP? Would you be willing to unprotect Panic! at the disco so that the double-redirect can be fixed? It seems that you protected this redirect after it was vandalized only once; usually admins are reluctant to grant protection unless there is persistent vandalism. --Russ (talk) 13:33, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

sprot for Ron Paul

Hi - we need at least semi-protection reinstated on Ron Paul - Veinor had changed the semi-protection to full protection for a week as per the block notice: (Ron Paul forums have called for registering and mass reversion at http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?t=82096 . The full protection expired, and IP addresses have descended to remove sourced and necessary material from the newsletter section in question, as predicted. And the page has been a target for other vandalism - so we need at least semi-protection reinstated. Can you do that tonight? Hopefully we won't need full protection again. Thank you. (It looks like you're on now, which is why I wrote directly.) Tvoz |talk 06:48, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

David Wall

I understand that there have been some editing concerns about the article David Wall. However, I don't understand why it re-directs to the by-election page (except that there was a losing candidate named David Wall!). There are at least two other "David Wall"s in Wikipedia: David S. Wall and David Wall (actor) (the latter I've just created in order to provide a blue link from his film's article). Therefore I suggest that the David Wall page should become a disambiguation page for all these "David Wall"s at a convenient point. Regards. -- MightyWarrior (talk) 22:06, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Chris Crocker (Internet celebrity) unblock, convert to semi?

Hi, saw that i was suppose to ask the block admin after I had posted a semi-protect/unprotect so also posting here. This article is a magnet for vandalism which semi usually handles so that the regular editors can weed out the rest. The protection was due to edit warring and it always involved one editor who has been blocked for three months for tenditious (sp?) editing. I'd like to catch up on some of the recent items posted for consideration on the talk page and see no reason why other registered editors shouldn't be also allowed to constructively add to the article. Please Consider This

Hello, this is PiazzaJordan2. You blocked my IP Code (69.250.110.254)until March 31st, 2008. Which other people in my family use it. I need it to edit 106 & Park. Somebody in my family, edited some pages in a vandalizing manner. Which, I had no idea of. Then, you blocked me. So I hope you can consider unblocking me. When I vandalize a page. Can we talk about this. Because I want to help clear vandalism to. I hate being blocked, I even consider this being a job for me. So please message back, thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Piazzajordan2 (talkcontribs) 23:39, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

I'm confused as to why you reverted Ataturk Quotes in the Ataturk page. It was cited and referenced. I'm not sure what you meant in your edit summary. Firstly though what's confusing is, why you remove something that is positive? If you believe I added it in the "wrong fashion" why not fix it yourself instead of removing? Or why not clarify what you mean in a Talk page? talk § _Arsenic99_ 07:37, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Why did you remove semiprotection from Harry Potter?

That article was getting regularly vandalised WITH the protection. Without it it will become unmanageable. I think you're opening Pandora's box here. Serendipodous 14:26, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Unprotection of furry fandom

You semi-protected this article several months back - the original protection request was just for 24 hours. Would you be willing to add a block message to the above user's talk page indicating the block you performed? This would greatly assist vandal patrolling after the IP block expires. Thanks.--Doug.(talk contribs) 08:11, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Oh, I guess I didn't read it carefully, I thought it was asking for the same thing, i.e. this Admin to post the block message on a specific user's page, instead it's a general request where you fixed it yourself - I suppose I could do that, I wasn't sure where to go looking for a block message to tag it with. Now I can just copy and edit yours. Thanks.--Doug.(talk contribs) 08:48, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Just to let you know, you protected this article in July 2007, and I have now unprotected it following a request at WP:RFPP for another go at unprotection, as it has been protected a very long time. The Creature from Jekyll Island

Hey CSCWEM, you deleted the last non-copyvio version of this page, I'd appreciate it if you could move that version of it to my userspace. I was somewhat laughing around at a sock-infested AfD for someone, I believe the author, and looking at the google cache to see why the guy was attracting so many conspiracy buffs when i saw the link to this book on the page. I dont know why, but it immediately brought up high school memories. I remember it being covered on NPR on the way to school one day, which caused my dad to buy it. I know this sounds rambly, but im tracking down some ref's, and im fairly certain I could write a fairly good article out of this, from its reception to its conspiracy nature, all with good sources and keeping the fringe guys away (for now). Would you mind? -Mask? 09:37, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

You are special

Clown, it is an honour to get in touch with you. Im just a beginner wikipedian with a handful of edits and im going through the stage of finding about all the amazing facts of wikipedia and you seem to pop up all the time and i can obviously see why. I could not go past your incredible, crazy what more can i say user page without saying hello and good luck with it.

You are definitely one of a kind, the number of edits you have made, the number of friends and enemies you have made, and i think that your page is the most unique on wikipedia. You are the standout, like the most popular celebrity in the whole wide wiki world. I dont know how you did it, i dont know how you started but you have one hell of an imagination and its crazy what you are. I dont know what else to say, it would take a lifetime to learn all the stuff there is to learn about wiki that i can not fathom doing it. I dont know how you keep your eyes healthy, you are human right? I have to change my glasses all the time because i spend 2 much time here. I dont know how you do it. Maybe your gifted, you must be. AfD nomination of Dude

An editor has nominated Dude, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dude and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 01:01, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Redirect of A-Wolf

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on A-Wolf, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because A-Wolf is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting A-Wolf, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. America's Best Dance Crew Needs Protection

I believe America's Best Dance Crew needs to be semi-protected. It's been constantly vandalized due to the results of tonights show, which many people (myself included) didn't seem to agree with. Regardless, all the edits are completely unrelated to any encyclopedic information about the show and are mostly done by unregistered users. By the same token, it has been unregistered users doing many of the reverts as well, but it's clear that it's more than any of the bots can keep up with and random pieces of vandalism could slip through the cracks over time. TheNewHubris's sockpuppet

How you catch people on sockpuppet? Do we go at check our ID number, or see the contribution. Because some sockpuppets the names can be different. Like Artisol2345 from june to october 2007; after that he made a new account Yorkabes till november pretending to be his sister;AL2TB during winter pretending to be his cousin. Sometimes people just lie on the backs, thinking they may not get caught. More times; I see people making 5 or 6 account with different names and pretending to be their counsins or siblings; to cheat other peoples. If I want to check if the user suspect sockpuppet; what identity should I check?--Freewayguy (Webmail) 18:17, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

User talk:Clarkerst

Hello CSCWEM! This editor asked at WP:RPP for his user talk to be unprotected so he could request an unblock. Since you're the blocking admin I was not about to do that; I just added the padlock and the block template to make his status clear. Though I fully support your original block, I didn't see any recent nonsense in his Talk page history (except for blanking), so I wonder if you might consider unprotecting his Talk? I did refer him to unblock-en-l@lists.wikimedia.org. If you prefer not to, that's fine as well. EdJohnston (talk) 03:52, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Oops! I misread the dates; this guy was blocked and the page was protected one year ago. I undid the protection to allow an appeal but will keep an eye on the Talk page. EdJohnston (talk) 03:14, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

DoctorGs

Hey Mr Clown. In July last year you blocked User:DoctorGs as a spam account. I'm not sure if there was more to it or if it is as it appears because he seems to have been blocked indefinitely with email disabled after making only three edits and without any warning at all. The three edits were all spamish but I think it was a matter of being new to Wikipedia and not being aware of our policies and guidelines rather than any deliberate attempt to spam. He faxed the foundation's office to request a block review because he had tried to email you four or five times without response. He also tried to request a block review on his talk page but made a mistake with the template and so no one ever knew that he was asking for a block review. So after more than six months waiting for responses he faxed the Foundation. I've exchanged emails with him (you can read them if you have OTRS access) and he seems to be very genuine and has promised to follow the external links and COI guidelines with regard to his own website, so I've unblocked him. I just wanted to let you know in case there is a problem with your email spam filters or something. Cheers, Sarah 00:06, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use Image:Misha_Sedgwick.jpg

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Misha_Sedgwick.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Rettetast (talk) 19:22, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Recent blocks

CSCWEM, your recent blocks have been off the charts inappropriate. Most received no final warnings, some no warnings at all, many had stopped editing hours before you blocked them, and the durations are astounding. I realize you aren't editing anymore, but if you aren't going to follow the blocking policy, you need to stop placing blocks as well. This isn't the first or second time I've had to point out this problem to you. Stop abusing the block button. - auburnpilot talk 23:00, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
