[edit] Introduction

I adapted this directly from the US version. I think it would be very helpful to have under all Canadian MPs and Senators. Once in place, it would largely take care of itself. It looks like it will be a lot of work, so I hope people are willing to pitch in whatever help they can.

[edit] Party Abbreviations

I suggest we use the following party abbreviations:

I see no other political parties with a reasonable chance of winning seats. (There are still a handul of Senators sitting as Progressive Conservatives.) We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.--handisnak 08:31, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Listing Order

Also, when listing Senators and MPs, I propose that they be listed in alphabetical order according to family name. --handisnak 08:37, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Not calling Territories Provinces

In the future, after the grunt work is done, the territorial articles could be renamed appropriately. --handisnak 09:57, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Problems

These templates, especially the Quebec and Ontario ones are much too large. They also violate the new Wikipedia:Categories, lists, and series boxes that state templates should only be used for actual series, not simply for related groups. Related groups are much better served by a categories. - SimonP 03:24, Jun 14, 2005 (UTC)

I have to agree with SimonP on this. The US model isn't readily adaptable to Canada, and some of the Canadian boxes are way too large for the articles. No American state has a congressional delegation anything like Ontario's number of MPs and senators; even California, with the largest congressional delegation, has just eight lines of House Reps (compare Ontario's 20 lines of MPs and Quebec's 15). But alternatively, the territories and PEI, fr'ex, are way too small to justify having their own categories. The "Parliamentary delegation" articles also can't be formatted anything like the American ones are. So we're going to need to come up with a very different way of handling this than the model being applied to US congresspeople. (Oh, and "delegation" isn't standard terminology in Canadian politics, either; it should really be "caucus".)
One possibility: break the Ontario and Quebec templates down regionally (e.g. separate templates for Northern Ontario, Eastern Ontario, Central Ontario, Western Ontario and Toronto, etc.) Another: stick to categories, but group the territories as a single category. Another: do lists instead. Yet another: skip it and stick to the way they're organized now.
Any other thoughts? Bearcat 04:35, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Ah Oh

I didn't know this was a dead project, so I went ahead and added the AB box to all the AB MP's. Do I need to revert them all now? Kevlar67 14:17, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Linkage

For what its worth, I've finished the last of the flags and corrected linkage. --Jay(Talk) 21:15, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Discussion

As previously noted, there's been a huge inconsistency in the way these templates are used: most provinces' parliamentary delegations didn't use them at all, with the result that some people have wrongly assumed that only a couple of them even existed.

Questions:

  1. Should we use these at all? There was never any strong consensus whether to use them or not when they were originally created.
  2. As you can see above, I've redesigned some of them to the {{navbox}} format that's generally more consistent with current Wikipedia practice. If we use these, should we use the navbox format or the old style?

- Bearcat (talk) 18:59, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

I don't think we should use these. Instead, I'd prefer to see a template that's specific to each individual (perhaps in an infobox) that lists the riding, date of entry to office, and other relevant details about the parliamentarian or senator. This could include a link to a list of parliamentarians by province, too. (By the way, I'm aware of {{Infobox CanadianSenator}} and {{Infobox CanadianMP}}; I'll inspect them later.)
Should consensus be to keep these templates, let's try to retain the "common look and feel" of the navbox format. Mindmatrix 02:28, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
FWIW, {{Infobox CanadianMP}} exists only as a redirect to {{Infobox Officeholder}}. I'll review the Senator box, though. Bearcat (talk) 09:01, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
