[edit] Enrollment
Current enrollment (2007-8) is about 1799[1]. Canyon Crest Academy is largely an upper class school, drawing from the neighborhoods of Carmel Valley, Rancho Santa Fe, and the cities of Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas. In March 2007, the first lottery was held to determine which students who had applied to Canyon Crest for the 2007-8 school year would be admitted. This year's about 4 out of 5 students who applied to Canyon Crest to be freshmen next year were chosen, at random, in the lottery.
[edit] Curriculum
One unique aspect of Canyon Crest is Envision, an arts program with 7 divisions: Digital/Fine Arts, Theater, Video/Film, Dance, Vocal Music, Audio Editing (added for the 2008-09 school year), and Instrumental Music. The program regularly performs shows and interacts with the North County creative community, and also trains the student in the particular field which allows the student to publish some of his/her own work. Students also have the option of taking classes from Miracosta Community College at the CCA campus, after school. In 2007 the band Senses Fail filmed one of their music videos on the school's campus, featuring the theater teacher Michael Schwartz as a strict English teacher.
Canyon Crest uses a 4x4 class schedule instead of the more common rotating block schedule, which means that students can complete 8 classes a year, rather than 6. CCA also offers a variety of elective classes not traditionally taught in public schools including American Sign Language, Japanese, Film and Society, Advanced Topics (math theories and phenomenons), Anatomy and Physiology, Science and Research (lab work conducting research, practice making research papers), Environmental Science, Stage Craft, Music Theater production, Rock Band (application only), Surf and Lifesaving, Recording Arts, Interior Design, and Fashion Design.(The current student to teacher ratio (overall) is roughly 34:1. This year's API score was the highest in San Diego County.
In 2007, the College Board announced that CCA's class of 2008 led the nation in AP World History scores for schools of its size. The AP World History teacher was Mark Van Over. This accolade was published by the College Board in the 2007 AP Report to the Nation.
The school's founding principal was Mr. David Jaffe. As of July 1, 2007, the principal is Mr. Brian Köhn.
As decided by a vote of the first student body, the school's colors are red and black, and the mascot is a raven. Although Canyon Crest Academy sponsors many sports teams, there is no football team, and there are no plans to add one.
[edit] Graduates
Canyon Crest Academy will see it's first graduating class in the class of 2007-08. These graduates have achieved many honors during their high school careers and have been accepted into many top universities including Harvard University, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, and Carnegie Mellon University.
[edit] Mascot
Canyon Crest Academy's first freshman class (class of 2008) originally voted a black panther as the mascot. However, the mascot was soon changed due to the similar mascot and school colors of a nearby school. So instead they changed it to a raven.
