The Canton Eagle Band is a high school band program, directed by Rob Toups in Canton, Texas.

[edit] Rob Toups

Rob Toups is Director of Bands and Fine Arts for the Canton Independent School District in Canton, Texas. He has been in this position since 1991. Mr. Toups is a member of ATSSB, TMEA, TBA, TMAA and Phi Beta Mu. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and has 21 years of experience in public school music. Under his direction Canton bands earn consistent Sweepstakes awards and have remained in the top 3 AAA bands in both State UIL marching and TMEA concert honor band since 1998. Mr. Toups is the recipient of the 2004-2005 Texas University Interscholastic League Sponsor Excellence award. His bands have performed in Europe, Canada, the United States Army Military Academy at West Point and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The Canton High School Symphonic Winds were named the TMEA State AAA Honor Band in 2003. In addition, the CHS marching bands were named the three-time consecutive UIL Texas State Marching Champions in 2002, 2004 and 2006, setting a record never before achieved in any Texas school classification. Along with his duties with the Canton ISD, Mr. Toups served as the Association of Texas Small School Bands’ AAA representative to the State Board from 1998-2004, and is currently the President-Elect of ATSSB. He is also the Texas Music Adjudicators Association marching band Vice-President. Mr. Toups conducts, adjudicates and clinics throughout Texas and surrounding States. He has published articles and holds workshops on successful teaching techniques, student motivation and music education in rural school settings. He and his lovely wife Carolyn have three children, Leah, Lindsey and Mark.

David Landry is Associate Director of Bands for Canton ISD. His responsibilities include conducting the High School Concert Band and assisting with the middle school bands. Prior to teaching in Canton, Mr. Landry taught for six years in Whitehouse ISD, and five years in Louisiana. He holds a B.M.E. degree from McNeese State University and a M.M.E. degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. Mr. Landry is active as a clinician in the East Texas area and currently serves as the ATSSB Region 3/20 Middle School Coordinator. His professional affiliations include TMEA, TBA, ATSSB, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

[edit] Ginger Dillard

Ginger Dillard is an Assistant Band Director with the Canton Bands. Her responsibilities include administrating the middle school band program and conducting the Canton Middle School Concert Band, coordinating and instructing the high school and middle school colorguards, and assisting with beginning band classes. Ms. Dillard attended Tarleton State University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education in the fall of 1999. While in college she served as president of Tau Beta Sigma and was a charter member of Mu Phi Epsilon. She is affiliated with TMEA and ATSSB.

[edit] Christopher McHenry

Chris McHenry serves as the middle school symphonic band director and director of percussion, including the writing and arrangement for the Eagle Marching Band’s percussion section. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Mr. McHenry earned his Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana, where he studied under Kenneth Green. He is active as an adjudicator throughout Louisiana, and is a member of TMEA and the Percussive Arts Society.

2003-2004 Awards Mesquite Invitational Marching Band Competition - Best In Class (swept awards for AAA). Frisco March of Champions, October 4, 2003 - Best in Class - overall grand champion for 1A, 2A and 3A divisions. Awards: Best Music, Best Guard, Best Drumline, Best Marching, Best General Effect, Grand Champion. De Soto Classic Marching Competition - competed in the 4A and 5A class - swept that classification receiving all honors, best drum major, best percussion, best guard, and best in class.

2004-2005 Awards Region 3 Marching Contest (UIL)- (Advanced to area competition) Area B Class 3A Marching Contest (UIL)- Richland Hills, TX (Advanced to State) UIL AAA State Marching Band Champions, 2004 Mesquite Invitational Marching Band Competition - Best In Class (swept awards) Frisco Marching Contest - Best in Class - overall grand champion for 1A, 2A and 3A divisions. Received awards for: Best Marching, Best Percussion, Best Drum Major, Best Guard

2005-2006 Awards Mesquite Marching Invitational - Best in Class. USSBA Texas Regional Marching Contest - Best in Class - Best Band (Highest Score).

2006-2007 Awards Region 3 Marching Contest (UIL) - (Advanced to area competition) Area B Class 3A Marching Contest (UIL) - Denton, TX (Advanced to State Finals) UIL AAA State Marching Band Champions, 2006 (Note: First occurrence ever - 3 times in a row to win State Marching Competition.) 2006 Cedar Creek Marching Festival - Best Horn Line, Best Drum Line, Best Color Guard, Best Drum Major, Grand Champion. Mesquite Marching Invitational - Best Horn Line, Best Drum Line, Best in Class AAA.

The immense success of the Canton Eagle Band has affected the entire town of Canton, and has become a new standard in the surrounding towns. The competitiveness of the Canton Band has helped to other nearby bands to achieve high goals as well, including the Wills Point Band, which has reached the runner-up position in the state finals, only losing to Canton by two points.
