Canon EOS 1000D was announced on 10 June 2008 (In Japan as EOS Kiss F, in the US as EOS Rebel XS) and will be released in June 2008.
It is believed to be a redesigned 400D with a major downgrade from 9 point AF to 7 points, but offers Live preview, DiG!C III and less weight. Canon also changed the storage device from CompactFlash to Secure Digital High Capacity. Most of these changes were seen before in the 450D. Because the Digital Rebel series (or series with three digits, 400D, 450D, etc.) has evolved to become more advanced the entry-level target Digital SLR, the 1000D can be considered Canon's new line of entry-level Digital SLR.
The name 1000D with four digits is also similar to that of the 1000F, Canon's very first Rebel Camera, and the name Rebel XS is also the name of two of Canon's film SLRs, the Rebel XS and Rebel XS N.
It may act as a budget pricer along with 400D to compete with offerings from other manufacturers like the Sony α 200 or the Nikon D40 series (D40, D40X, D60 - they are considered as the affordable entry-level DSLR since Spring 2007).
