Canning Dam
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Canning Dam is a major water source for the city of Perth, Western Australia. It is situated on the Darling Scarp and acts as an impediment to the natural flow of the Canning River.
Construction of Canning Dam began in 1933 following the Great Depression.
The Dam is connected to Perth's Integrated Water Supply Scheme by the Canning Tunnel. Prior to its opening in 1975 water flowed through a the Canning Contour Channel to Gosnells.
Since the completion of Perth's new sea water desalination plant, Canning Dam is also able to be used as a storage reservoir for the excess water from the plant. The water can be pumped from the plant through the new Forrestdale Pumping Station to top up the dam.
