Cane (short for "Hurricane"; this is how the character has almost always been addressed) was introduced as a bartender at Indigo, Neil Winters' nightclub. Shortly after his introduction he became involved with Amber Moore (Adrienne Frantz), who first used him to make Adrian Korbel (Eyal Podell) jealous; she later found out that Cane was trying to find his birth mother. He had been adopted by a woman named Violet Montgomery, who had died shortly after, and then raised by Violet's brother, Langley Ashby who lives in Canberra. At the same time, Amber was also trying to track down Jill Abbott's (Jess Walton) son, Phillip Chancellor III, who had actually been switched with another child by Katherine Chancellor (Jeanne Cooper) shortly after his birth; she was the first to come across the link between the two families--Violet Montgomery--and realized that Cane might be Jill's son. Since Katherine and Jill were acting so strange around him, before he knew they were his mother and grandmother, he coined them the "looney toons." It was revealed in February 2007 that Amber's suspicions were correct; Cane is Jill's son. Jill and Cane shared a tearful reunion.

Intent on using Cane for the money he did not know he had, Amber tricked him into marriage by arranging a faux wedding in Las Vegas in March 2007. (A friend of Amber's, Alison Stewart (Marnie Schulenberg), impersonated Cane during the ceremony).

Cane and Amber got used to being married, and eventually moved onto the Chancellor estate. Kay also offered an executive position to Cane in the construction division of Chancellor Industries, which he accepted.

Later, Cane began to be suspicious concerning his marriage to Amber. He realised that his signature on the wedding certificate did not look like his own, though Amber claimed it was because of how drunk he was. After contacting Amber's former mother-in-law Brooke Logan (Katherine Kelly Lang) and asking questions about her history with Amber, he eventually realised the truth, that the marriage was invalid, and now wants nothing to do with Amber and claimed that she only ever wanted him for the Chancellor money. Before asking her to sign the papers invalidating their marriage, Cane slept with Amber and then rejected her, hoping to make her feel his pain. Amber, meanwhile, appears to have actually fallen in love with Cane during the marriage, and is devastated at his rejection.

In September 2007, Cane shared a kiss with the recently-divorced Lily Winters (Christel Khalil), and also appear began a flirtation with A.D.A. Heather Stevens (Vail Bloom). On the December 4th episode, Cane and Heather mutually decided to be just friends, siting no chemistry as the reason. Cane and Lily started dating, despite Neil's (Lily's father) disapproval. Cane was planning to move into a condo when he finds out that Lily was planning to move out as well. Cane wanted to ask Lily to move in with him but he's not sure about Neil's approval. During this time, Lily became pregnant with Cane's child, but unfortunately miscarried early on. Cane and Lily continue to see each other, and they each have professed their love for one another on several occasions. They are in a committed relationship, though marriage does not seem to be in the horizon.
