Candy-O is the second studio album by American new wave band The Cars, released in 1979 (see 1979 in music). The cover was painted by Alberto Vargas[1] based on a design by Johnny Lee the art director at Elektra and Ron Coro.[2]

[edit] Cover art

The original concept of using pinup art came from the band's drummer David Robinson who also suggested that it should be painted by the then 83 year old Alberto Vargas.[2] According to Johnny Lee, Alberto Vargas was initially uninterested in doing the cover until persuaded to do so by his great-niece.[2] Alberto Vargas's first few paintings were rejected by the record company until he removed the nipples and pubic hair.[2]
