- "Candidate" is the literal translation of various academic degrees, varying from Bachelor's to Doctor's. For example, in Sweden and Finland, "Candidate of Philosophy" is a Bachelor's level degree, and in the the Russian (or Soviet) system, Kandidat is a doctorate-level degree.
