The canary girls were the United Kingdom's TNT shell makers of World War I (1914–1918). When the men were joining the army there was a shortage of munitions workers and other male jobs alike. The United Kingdom used slogans like 'National Service' or 'Women's Land Army' to spur them on. Making them feel part of the action.
They were nicknamed Canary girls because of the color of their skin as a resultant of the job of filling the shells. Many Canary girls where part of the suffragettes.
