The singing human voice is also sometimes considered an instrument. Voices are classified according to their range into the following categories:
- Soprano, the highest female voice
- Mezzo-soprano, just lower than a soprano
- Alto or contralto, the lower female voice
- Tenor, the highest standard male voice
- Baritone, male voice between tenor and bass
- Bass, the lowest male voice
- Castrato, a castrated male with a high voice
- Countertenor, a high male singer with alto range (like the castrato), generally using falsetto
