  • C. zitteli (Pleininger, 1894)

Campylognathoides ("curved jaw", Strand 1928) was a rhamphorhynchoid pterosaur, discovered in the Württemberg Lias deposits and was the first specimen from the area, consisting of arm fragments. Further specimens were found in the Holzmaden shale.

Compared to relative Dorygnathus, the beak on this species in relatively short and the skull is dominated by a large eye socket and sclerotic ring. The snout ended in a point with the teeth being sparse and pointed and may have been a fish eater.

Because the hip socket was in an upward lateral position, this genus of pterosaur wasn't able to walk on its hind legs but must have walked on all four appendages.

Four species of this genus are known; Campylognathoides indicus (Jain 1874) = Ctenochasma (Von Mayer 1852), Campylognathoides liassicus (Quenstadt 1858) = Pterodactylus liassicus (Quenstedt 1858), and Campylognathoides zitteli (Pleininger 1894). The remains were first called Campylognathus (Pleininger 1895) until it was discovered that the name was preoccupied by a genus of the Hymenoptera.
